There is a measuring tool and method for everything inscience. The science of metre is a measuring tool for
poetry, which is known as ‘al-Bahar’ in Arabic prosody.
The Arab poets of the pre -Islamic era used some specific
metres in their poems, but it was unrevealed and nobody
analyzed it scientifically before the prominent Arab
philologist Khalil bin Ahmad al-Farahidi. He has the credit
of discovering fifteen metres, such as Taweel, Madid,
Baseet, Kamil, wafir and so on. His student Akhfash
revealed another metre called ‘al-Motadaric’. So, the total
number of metre became sixteen. There is no other
language in the world that has such a large number of metre
of poems. It is very crucial to preserve Arabic language and
its metres for understanding the meanings of the holy
Quran and Sunnah. Because poetry is the register of the
Arabs, which is very vital to get an idea about the
contemporary life style of Arabs and their culture. This
paper is an analytical discussion of metre in Arabic poetry.
