Abstract

Mahmoud Darwish (1941-2008) is one of the prominent
contemporary Palestinian poets and genius writers who contributed
a lot in Palestinian resistance literature against Israeli colonialism
and occupation. He loved his motherland from the core of his
heart. Therefore, his poems were a luminous flame to awaken the
unaware people to remind them about their extorted rights. Hence,
his poems were as thunders on Zionist forces. His poems ignited
human feelings and emotions and shook the minds of international
community. This great poet influenced his country (Palestine) by
every word and verse of his poems and encouraged his nation. A
true artistic expression of tragedy of his life, his family and nation
is found in his poems that touches the heart. Although some
inevitable circumstances forced him to leave his beloved country,
his love for her was everlasting in the deep of his heart. His name
is associated with the poetry of the revolution and nation. This
paper reveals his contribution to the development of modern
Arabic poetry as he introduced a new dimension in Arabic
literature by applying symbolism in his poems.
