Abstract

In the history of Islam the Umayyad period (41-132AH) was shaky due to
various political, social, cultural, religious and civilizational reasons which
the early Muslim period did not face. Of these, political insurgency,
tribalism, disagreement, dogmatism and ethical polarization took root in
the society and thereby threatened its unity. Under these newly arisen
circumstances which brought tremendous upheaval to the then Muslim
society, some poets, realizing the need for piousness, composed
sermonizing poems in order to give some moral uplift to them. These
poets held reforming visions towards the society, which played a vital role
to make people uphold Islamic faith and live upright. Therefore, the aim
of the study is to highlight the contexts and find the dimensions which
formed their visions. In order to do so, the article, firstly, deals with the
necessity of sermonizing poems during Umayyad period, secondly, deals
with the concept of sermonizing poem, thirdly, casts light on the formative
visions of those poets, and finally, reaches a conclusion containing the
findings of the article. As for the research methodology, the study follows
social approach. The study reaches the conclusion that without
consideration of any social context no literary critical method would
completely succeed.
