Abstract
Prof. Masumi (1931-2009) is an accredited authority on Islamic
studies and history of Arabic literature in the post-independence
era of India, whose entire life was dedicated to the service of
Arabic and Urdu literature. This distinguished scholar
enthusiastically devoted his time to explore the unnoticed Indian
classical heritage of oriental researches preserved in various
premier national and international libraries. His extra ordinary
talent and depth of knowledge in Indo-Arab philological sciences
fetched him acclamation and recognition from literary circles of
India and abroad. Because of his valuable contributions to Arabic
language and literature, Indian Government awarded him “The
Presidential Award” in 1991. He played a dominant role in
propagating Arabic heritage of arts and sciences preserved in
Indian Museums and oriental libraries by reviewing and editing
with due references and valuable notes. He not only pointed out
numerous major and minor errors committed by some very wellknown
Arabists and famous authors of Islamic studies on the
basis of historical and linguistic evidences, but also greatly
facilitated a correct understanding of different Arabic texts by his
deep studies. Prof. Masumi produced a number of research works
of high standard in Arabic, Urdu, English and Persian. In
addition, he edited a large number of research works that were
published in standard journals, magazines and periodicals that
context from home and abroad.
