Abstract

The conflict between Eastern and Western civilizations is a
fundamental problem on which many Arab writers and poets have
written. However, few of them have succeeded in providing
solutions to this problem. Egyptian novelist Yehyia Hakki (1992)
is regarded as one of these few who have given solutions to this
issue. As for the literary work by which he has earned his fame is
his realistic as well as symbolic novel called "Qindil Umm
Hashim” or “The Lamp of Umm Hashim”. In this novel, the
novelist has presented his balance of vision to the radical conflict
between the Eastern and Western civilizations in a way that has
convinced most of the contemporary Arab writers to follow. Also,
this novel is regarded as the finest Arabic model of realistic and
symbolic novels of the first half of the 20th century. Thus, "Qindil
Umm Hashem" is of great importance from the literary and
historical points of view alike. Therefore, I chose this novel to
study and shed light on its vision and style. Accordingly, I have
followed stylistic method while conducting the study and divided
the study into four sections: an overview of the novel, vision, style
and major findings. As for the major findings, it can be said that
the novel guides the reader to walk with science and tradition
simultaneously. And it is hoped that this study will benefit the
students of Arabic language and literature in general and those who
are doing their researches on the works of Yehya Haqqi in
particular.
