Abstract

Hujjatullah al-Balighah "The Conclusive Argument of God" is
the masterpiece of Shah Wali ullah of Delhi (1703-1762), who
is considered to be the most reformist scholar and mystic
philosopher of the Indian subcontinent. This work is originally
written in Arabic, and his mission to reform the intellectual and
socio-political conditions of his time led him to embark upon an
ambitious agenda of illuminating the inner meanings of Islam
through a new discipline of ‘ilm asrar al-din/al-shari’ah, the
‘science of the subtle meaning of religion` in the 18th century. It
is done in order to argue for the rational, ethical and spiritual
basis for implementation of the hadith injunctions of the Prophet
Muhammad (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam). This article deals
with the uniqueness of the book Hujjatullah al-Balighah by
Shah Wali ullah of Delhi in terms of ideas and debate on the
topics presented by him. Al-Delhi’s thoughts in this book reflect
his idealism. He expresses his impressive thoughts with the
qua’n as fundamental ingredient and al-Sunnah as commentator
to the al-Qura’n.
