Abstract

‘Utilitarianism’ has been studied and practiced in Western
philosophy, literary criticism and other sciences for more than
two thousand years. Did classical Arabic literary criticism study
and practice it? If so, was it influenced by Western philosophy?
These are the fundamental questions which I have tried to find
the answers to in the present article and, therefore, I have chosen
a book titled “Minhaj al Bulagha wa Siraj al-Udaba” by Hajim
al-Qartajanni which is best known for its fundamental approach
to the theory of rhetoric and poetry-criticism based on both the
Western and Arabic philosophy. The article is, therefore, divided
into five sections: firstly, an introduction; secondly, a brief
account of the book in question; thirdly, a brief overview of
‘Utilitarianism’; fourthly, standards taken by the author of the
book to ensure the utility of poetry and finally, a conclusion. I
have followed in this article both inductive and deductive
methods to reach concluding remarks. It is hoped that this article
would help those who are interested in various aspects of
classical Arabic criticism.
