Abstract

Language is the medium of human communication that reflects the
real manifestations of a society. Human beings express their
emotions among each other either as joy or as sorrow, through
language. Also, it is a sign of Almighty Allah. Undoubtedly, no
language on the earth is similar to the others. A man acquires his
mother tongue naturally in his childhood from the society where he
lives. But learning foreign language (FL) is different from learning
one’s mother tongue because of some difficulties. There are some
similarities and differences between one language and another.
Hence, foreign language (FL) learners have to identify the
similarities and differences of target language with the mother
tongue before learning FL so that they can achieve this language
very easily and swiftly. The method discussed to learn FL is called
‘Contrastive Analysis’ (CA). It (CA) is the systematic comparison
of two or more languages to describe their similarities and
differences. CA has often been done for pedagogical purpose. This
article is designed to provide better explanations of similarities and
differences for FL learners, translators along with better teaching
materials for language learners. In addition, it elucidates what
Contrastive Analysis is along with why it is originated and
developed in Applied Linguistics. It also sheds light on the query
either CA started in traditional Arabic before starting in the West or
not. This is an analytical article mostly following qualitative
research method. And it is hoped that, this study will benefit the FL
learners, translators as well as the second language curriculum
designers.
