Abstract

Naguib Mahfouz (1911-2006) is the first Muslim Nobel
Laureate for literature in 1988. This Egyptian novelist is a
legendary figure of Arabic Literature in modern age. He has
contributed to the Arabic Literature through novels to a great
extent. In fact, novel and its modern trend were unknown to the
Arabs. Zainab and Awdatur Ruh-were only two novels in
Egypt. In this sensitive period of the World War-II and its
consequences this great novelist started his literary journey with
historic novels and then socio-realistic and philosophical
creations. His masterpiece of creativity — Trilogy- was a unique
creation. Some 45 novels were written by this great writer which
were also highly applauded home and abroad for its impressive
bounty of arts, new dimensions of techniques, diversity of style,
fashion and heartfelt expression. These novels have vastly
contributed to uplift the Arabic literature to a distinctive height.
The present article is an endeavor to search the flow of
development of Arabic literature through highly creative works
of Naguib Mahfouz over the six decades of the last century.
