Status of Arabic language, its characteristics and its universality.Abstract
The human beings are Allah’s noblest creation. He placed them
upon all other creations bestowing upon them innumerous divine
bounties. Their ability of linguistic expression and verbal
communication is one of these invaluable bounties. This human
prerogative is indicative of Allah’s majesty and a part of His
miracle (30:22). This is considered to be the best of Allah’s mercy
upon the humanity at large. It is so because linguistic power makes
the human beings capable to express their imaginations, ideas and
thoughts. It helps them to articulate their imaginations, state their
likes and priorities, and exchange their views with others. It is
noteworthy that the existence of language is found only in the
human society. Dr. Salih Muhammad As-Shanati indicated to this
reality when he said: “Language is indeed an intrinsic part of social
life, as it does not exist except in a human society. This is why the
evolution of language is seen to be associated with the emergence
of human beings on earth.” Adam (A.) was created and instructed
into language to help him realize the objectives of his arrival on
earth (2:31). This verse (2:31) of the Quran, says Dr. Abu Sikkin,
indicates that Allah instructed Adam (a) the name of every things
and taught all languages. So he and his offspring talked in all
languages. Adam’s posterity then spread on different parts of the
earth and confined them to a particular vernacular forgetting other
languages. In this way the Arabic language came into existence.
