Abstract

Elius Farhat (1893-1976) is one of the famous émigré Arab poets
who used to live in Brazil, Latin America. Due to the
impoverishment, he could not carry out his academic education
after finishing the primary level. Although he was not taught the
discourse of Arabic rhythm, rules of Arabic grammar and Rhetoric
during his lifetime, the application of all these have been clearly
observed in his poems. Throughout his stay in Brazil, he lived on
selling various commodities by peddling. During these days, he
faced severe twinge of suffering, impatience of depression,
agitation of melancholy and the flames of denial. Hence, he took
the pen as a paint-brush of an artist and portrayed his memoirs
before the people based on his own understanding and experience
of distinct philosophy derived from the practical circumstances.
For the depiction of his life experience and the narrative of his
lifetime harsh conditions within his poems swiftly spread
throughout the abroad and the whole Arab land. Being charmed
and vigorous, people began to recite his poems in the form of
songs. In this article, together with a short description of his
biography, we will make an effort to elucidate the artistic portrayal
of his poems, which embrace the description of suffering.
