This study also assessed how
FSIs vary across different groups of banks (State-owned, Conventional Private
Commercial Banks (PCBs), Islamic Banks, Foreign Banks, 4th Generation Banks)
and impact the stability of banks in Bangladesh. Two separate analysis have
been conducted: Core FSI with ANOVA and bank stability with Panel Regression
Model. Bank Z Score value was used as a measure of Stability. Variables like
Capital Adequacy (CRAR), Asset Quality (NPL), Profitability (ROA & ROE) and
Liquidity (LCR & NSFR) were considered as measures of banking soundness.
The results show that soundness varies significantly among different groups of
banks. The condition of State-owned commercial banks is really perilous as they
are burdened with significantly high amount of NPL and lower amount of profit.
Only Foreign banks showed better financial soundness in terms of all the chosen
FSIs. The results of Panel Fixed Effect Model depict that profitability has strong
positive impact on banking stability in Bangladesh. Non-performing loans
and liquidity have negative impact on stability. The regression findings also
reveal that capital adequacy impacts stability negatively. This negative relation
demands a thorough review of the existing capital adequacy requirements of the
country’s banking sector. These research findings will provide the policy-makers
as well as the regulatory authorities with significant policy implications and
also help them conduct an in-depth macro-prudential analysis towards a stable
financial system. However, these findings require to be interpreted cautiously
keeping in mind that these selected FSIs are only some of many other tools such
as early warning systems, stress testing and so on.
Copyright (c) 2023 Journal of Business Administration https://journal.library.du.ac.bd/index.php/JBA/article/view/3216 INTERACTION BETWEEN INDIVIDUAL AND CORPORATE WORK LIFE BALANCE STRATEGIES AND THEIR ASSOCIATIONS WITH SUBJECTIVE WELLBEING : EVIDENCE FROM RMG SECTOR OF BANGLADESH 2023-06-06T21:41:19+06:00 Md. Kamrul Bari librarian@du.ac.bd Melita Mehjabeen librarian@du.ac.bd Laila Habib librarian@du.ac.bd
This research aims to identify if and how individual and organizational Work
Life Balance (WLB) strategies are associated with the perception of Subjective
wellbeing (SWB) of Readymade Garments (RMG) workers in Bangladesh. For
this study, 241 samples from the RMG sector of the country have been selected
and data was collected through structured questionnaire. Ordinary Least
Square (OLS) regression has been conducted to investigate the relationship
among the perception of work life balance and subjective wellbeing of the target
group. Results show that Timing, Tempo, Role Conflict, and interaction between
individual and organizational WLB positively enhance WLB of Bangladeshi
RMG workers. The study also found significant positive relationship among (a)
workers’ beliefs about his/her own satisfaction with life, and (b) autonomy to
set his/her own roster with affective Subjective Wellbeing (SWB) of the RMG
workers of the country. On the contrary, role conflict was found to have a
negative effect on SWB. Interestingly though, the effect of WLB has been found
to have no significant effect on the SWB in the RMG workers of Bangladesh.
Moreover, composite scores of WLB and SWB show that the workers’ work and
life are moderately balanced and overall, they are dissatisfied with their lives.
Wide scale adoption of relevant WLB supportive activities, building awareness
to develop effective individual as well as organizational WLB strategies by
both the corporates and the Government, and rigorous psychological training
will ensure collective wellbeing of the workers in Bangladesh ensuring an
environment of ‘decent work’ in this sector catalyzing Bangladesh’s efforts to go
one step closer towards achieving SDG 8 (Decent work for all). This research
also offers an extensive guideline about the most relevant individual and
organizational WLB strategies to improve WLB status as well as the happiness
of the RMG workers of the country. This study also offers a wide range of future
research opportunities and policy directions to both the RMG managers and the
Government of Bangladesh.
Copyright (c) 2023 Journal of Business Administration https://journal.library.du.ac.bd/index.php/JBA/article/view/3217 MAJOR GROWTH CHALLENGES FACED BY BANGLADESHI E-commerce STARTUPS 2023-06-06T21:42:54+06:00 Mark Anupom Mollick librarian@du.ac.bd Shakila Yasmin librarian@du.ac.bd
E-commerce in Bangladesh has become a disruptive force in the new normal.
However, compared to developed countries, the sector is still in infancy.
Many companies are struggling to grow and several big ones have shut down
recently. Although the e-commerce sector has attracted attention from different
stakeholders, there has been little research that explored the challenges while
trying to grow in Bangladesh. This qualitative study investigates the major
growth challenges e-commerce companies in Bangladesh are facing and
probable solutions. In-depth interviews with six e-commerce entrepreneurs and
industry experts in this study revealed that the major challenges that affect the
growth of e-commerce are funding, finding the right talent and supply chain.
The findings add value in the existing literature in South East Asian countries
having similar environment factors and ecosystems. This study is expected to
help founders and other stakeholders to prioritize solutions to tackle the growth
challenges in e-commerce.
Copyright (c) 2023 Journal of Business Administration https://journal.library.du.ac.bd/index.php/JBA/article/view/3218 Consumer Attitude towards Clothing Apparel of Unique Designer Brands in Bangladesh 2023-06-06T21:43:53+06:00 Tanzina Akhter librarian@du.ac.bd
Early consumer behavior researchers rarely focused on the attitudinal
dimension of clothing buyers although it has always remained as a prime
building block of the Consumer Behavior (CB). This study adopts multiple
regression techniques to analyze the data collected from 140 apparel buyers to
examine the determinants of consumer attitude with respect to unique designer
clothing brands of Bangladesh. The analysis reveals that out of seven identified
predictors, three items, namely- celebrity endorsement, quality, and aesthetic
aspects, significantly influence consumer attitude towards unique designer
clothing apparel brands. The findings from this study is of critical importance
because it contributes to clothing marketers’ knowledge about the prominence
of Consumer Behavior (CB) in the fashion marketing paradigm and offers an
extensive understanding of the drivers of consumer attitude with respect to the
unique designer clothing apparel brands.
Copyright (c) 2023 Journal of Business Administration https://journal.library.du.ac.bd/index.php/JBA/article/view/3219 DETERMINANTS OF EMPLOYEE PERFORMANCE IN EMERGING ECONOMY 2023-06-06T21:45:32+06:00 Mohammad Shariful Islam librarian@du.ac.bd Rebaka ultana librarian@du.ac.bd Lamiya Rahman librarian@du.ac.bd
The key thrust of this research is to identify the factors influencing employee
performance in private commercial banks of Bangladesh, while previous studies
investigated human resources management practices. A pretested close-ended
questionnaire was used to collect data from the respondents. Judgmental sampling
techniques were used to select ten banks and 250 respondents, and factor analysis
methods were used to analyze the data. The reliability test of items was confirmed
by Cronbach’s Alpha test (0.755). The key outcome of the study revealed that
leadership style, performance appraisal system, training and development, job
satisfaction, employee engagement, compensation, and rewards significantly
impact employee performance. However, in this paper, employee engagement and
leadership style are revealed as new factors in the banking industry. The study
further recommended that private commercial banks should give more emphasis
on these factors to leverage employee performance. Finally, a few suggestions
were made by the authors to increase employee performance that may help
professional practitioners and owners for relevant policy and guidance in future.
In conclusion, some limitations and future directions are also articulated.
Copyright (c) 2023 Journal of Business Administration
